Aviation News – President Emmanuel Macron has officially named France’s next-generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier France Libre, a tribute to the Free French Forces of World War II. The vessel is the centerpiece of a €10.2 billion program designed to maintain French naval supremacy and replace the aging flagship Charles de Gaulle.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, marks a pivotal moment for the PANG (Porte-Avions de Nouvelle Génération) project. Development of the massive carrier is a collaborative effort involving French defense giants Naval Group and TechnicAtome, with construction expected to intensify over the coming decade to meet a scheduled launch in the late 2030s.
The selection of France Libre serves a dual purpose: it honors the legacy of the French Resistance while signaling the nation’s commitment to strategic autonomy. As the current flagship Charles de Gaulle nears its decommissioning date after decades of service, this new vessel ensures that France remains the only nation outside the United States to operate a nuclear-powered carrier equipped with catapults.
Technically, the France Libre will be significantly larger than its predecessor, utilizing a nuclear propulsion system that allows for unlimited range and long-duration missions without refueling. Its flight deck will feature advanced electromagnetic catapults (EMALS) to launch a full complement of Rafale M and future SCAF (Système de Combat Aérien du Futur) fighter jets, drastically increasing its operational tempo.
“This choice is a testament to our history and a projection of our future strength,” stated a government representative during the announcement. “The France Libre will be the ultimate instrument of our sovereignty and a mobile piece of French territory on the high seas.”
Looking ahead, the project will serve as a major industrial engine for the French defense sector, supporting thousands of high-tech jobs. The focus now shifts to the final design phase and the integration of next-generation drone technology and laser defense systems.
The France Libre represents the pinnacle of European naval engineering and a massive financial commitment to national defense. As it moves toward sea trials in the next decade, the carrier will ensure France remains a leading global power capable of projecting force across any ocean.
