Aviation News – Pratt & Whitney has received a $1.6 billion contract to sustain F135 engines that power all three variants of the F-35 Lightning II, underscoring the engine’s critical role in global defense operations.
The undefinitized contract action, awarded to the RTX-owned manufacturer, covers a broad range of sustainment services for U.S. and international operators. These include depot-level maintenance and repair, spare parts replenishment, material management, propulsion system integration, engineering support, and software sustainment for the F-35 fleet.
The F135 engine, designed for high performance and reliability, requires rigorous lifecycle support due to the aircraft’s advanced capabilities. The sustainment work helps ensure optimal readiness levels, improved mission availability, and long-term operational stability across the fighter’s global user community.
“This contract reinforces our commitment to providing reliable propulsion support for the F-35 and ensuring operators remain mission-ready,” a Pratt & Whitney spokesperson said.
The new funding strengthens ongoing efforts to maintain the F-35 program’s global sustainment infrastructure and supports future scaling as more nations adopt the aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney’s continued work on F135 sustainment highlights the engine’s strategic importance, the growing international F-35 fleet, and the long-term demand for dependable support systems that keep next-generation fighters operational.
