Aviation News – Raytheon, an RTX business, has secured a $1.7 billion contract to deliver four Patriot air and missile defense systems to Spain, strengthening the country’s national air defense amid evolving regional threats.
The deal, approved under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program, covers a full Patriot configuration, including advanced radars, launchers, command-and-control stations, and training equipment. Spain selected the system as part of its broader defense modernization drive to enhance sovereignty and protect critical infrastructure.
The Patriot system is designed to detect, track, and intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. Its modular architecture allows rapid deployment and integration, while the system’s proven bolt-on upgrades enable operators to adapt to new threat environments without replacing the entire platform.
“Modernizing air and missile defense is vital to Spain’s security and sovereignty,” said Pete Bata, senior vice president of Global Patriot at Raytheon. He added that cooperation with the Spanish government and local industry will help ensure operational readiness against emerging challenges.
Beyond delivery, the program deepens industrial cooperation, with Raytheon working alongside Spanish defense firms such as Sener, which contributes to the electro-mechanical control systems of the GEM-T missile within the global Patriot supply chain. This collaboration is expected to support local industry while ensuring long-term sustainment.
The contract positions Spain to bolster its layered air defense capability for decades to come, while reinforcing transatlantic defense ties. As threats continue to evolve, the Patriot system’s upgrade path and international user base provide Spain with a resilient and future-ready shield.
