Aviation News – Spain has authorized a seven-year framework agreement valued at €5.4 billion ($6.3 billion) for the joint acquisition of at least seven Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, securing four tankers for the Polish Air Force by 2030.
The Spanish Council of Ministers formally approved the framework on August 25, 2026, establishing a multi-billion-euro procurement structure that covers both the aircraft and total logistical support. The procurement is designed to scale up air mobility and refueling readiness across European NATO allies. Poland will participate directly through a dedicated addendum financed under the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, leveraging EU defense financing to acquire its initial national fleet.
This joint initiative represents a major step forward for the Polish Air Force, which is rapidly expanding its tactical capability with frontline platforms including F-16s, F-35As, and FA-50 light combat aircraft. By coordinating with the Ejército del Aire y del Espacio (Spanish Air and Space Force), Poland secures crucial delivery slots through 2030 without having to navigate lengthy solo procurement processes.
Operational and technical analysis highlights the strategic impact of the Airbus A330 MRTT. Equipped with dual boom and hose-and-drogue refueling systems, the widebody platform can carry up to 111 tonnes (245,000 lbs) of fuel without requiring auxiliary tanks. This capacity ensures long-range endurance and high fuel offload rates for multi-national air missions. In addition to aerial refueling, the aircraft serves as a multi-role backbone capable of strategic cargo transport, aeromedical evacuation (Medevac), and troop transport.
“Yesterday, the Spanish government issued approval for proceeding with joint purchases with Poland under the SAFE program for at least 7 Airbus A330 MRTT refueling and transport aircraft,” stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense. “Most importantly, by 2030, Poland will receive 4 aircraft. This is essential equipment for our Air Force and a crucial decision regarding NATO security.”
The framework agreement will govern maintenance, training, and operational support over its seven-year lifecycle as final contracts are prepared for signature. Once operational, the joint fleet will significantly enhance NATO’s eastern flank capabilities while consolidating European strategic autonomy in military transport and aerial refueling.
