Aviation News – The F-16 IVEWS electronic warfare system has officially passed 500 flight hours and 300 sorties, establishing a major milestone in next-generation threat protection for the Fighting Falcon. Designed to counter increasingly sophisticated anti-access/area-denial networks, the upgraded suite equips pilots with continuous defense against modern radio-frequency threats.
Formally designated as the AN/ALQ-257, the Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS) has undergone rigorous operational assessment flights under complex electromagnetic conditions. Tested across diverse air-to-air, air-to-ground, and joint combat scenarios, the system is engineered to protect fourth-generation fighters operating in heavily contested airspace where near-peer air defense systems present constant operational risk.
The developmental drive behind IVEWS stems from a growing global requirement to sustain the air combat relevance of fourth-generation jet fleets like the F-16 Fighting Falcon. As integrated air defense systems evolve with agile, frequency-hopping emitters and high-power surface-to-air missiles, legacy electronic countermeasure pods no longer offer sufficient coverage or reaction times.
At the operational core of IVEWS is an advanced ultra-wideband digital architecture that provides simultaneous 360-degree radar warning, threat identification, and active high-power electronic jamming. Crucially, the system features seamless digital pulse-to-pulse interoperability with the AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA). This eliminates legacy mutual interference, enabling the radar and jammer to operate at full capacity simultaneously without blanking cockpit radar displays during active jamming sequences.

With operational flight testing demonstrating robust performance, the IVEWS program positions the worldwide F-16 fleet for long-term operational viability. As global air forces adopt the suite alongside AESA radar upgrades, the platform ensures pilot survivability and battlefield lethality well into the future.
