Aviation News – Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® and XTEND have integrated the XTEND Operating System into the MDCX™ autonomy platform, enabling one operator to command multiple classes of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) simultaneously. The development strengthens joint all-domain command and control (JADC2) by improving situational awareness and speeding mission execution.

The collaboration brings XTEND’s XOS into Skunk Works’ Multi-Class MDCX (MC-MDCX) workstation, allowing unified command and control across different UAS classes. The capability was selected and demonstrated in November during a marsupial drone mission, where a larger UAS deployed a smaller Class 1 drone for a close-in task, highlighting the operational relevance of coordinated, multi-domain autonomy.

Operationally, the integrated system removes the need to hand off control between operators. Previously, a large UAS pilot would transfer command to a lower-level operator for smaller drones using first-person views, mark-and-fly commands, and immersive controls. With XOS bolted into MC-MDCX, a single operator can manage both platforms in one interface, reducing latency, complexity, and manpower requirements.
