Aviation News – Germany plans to purchase 15 additional F-35 fighter jets, strengthening its air capabilities as it replaces aging Tornado aircraft.

Germany, which previously ordered 35 F-35s, is preparing to expand its commitment to the U.S.-made stealth aircraft with an extra batch worth an estimated €2.5 billion. The decision follows ongoing modernization efforts within the German Air Force and aligns with Berlin’s long-term defense strategy, particularly its nuclear-sharing responsibilities within NATO.

The F-35 was selected as the Tornado’s successor partly because it is one of the few aircraft certified to carry American nuclear weapons—a mission the Tornado fleet has fulfilled for decades. The new jets will ensure continuity of this role while enhancing Germany’s interoperability with NATO allies and improving overall readiness.

In operational terms, the F-35 offers advanced stealth capabilities, integrated sensors, and real-time data sharing. These features allow pilots to identify and engage threats more efficiently, giving Germany a significant leap in air combat capability and situational awareness.
