Aviation News – Norway Settles with European Aerospace Firms Over Cancelled NH90 Order

Norway and three leading European aerospace companies have reached a settlement concerning the country’s €2.86 billion ($3.3 billion) damages claim following the cancellation of its NH90 military helicopter order. The agreement ends one of Europe’s most high-profile defense contract disputes.

The settlement follows Norway’s 2022 decision to terminate its order for NH90 submarine-hunting helicopters, citing long-standing delivery delays and operational shortcomings. The case involved Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo, and Fokker, all members of the NHIndustries consortium responsible for building the aircraft. Norway had sought compensation for both the undelivered helicopters and related costs after grounding its NH90 fleet.

The NH90, a twin-engine multi-role helicopter, was designed to perform naval and tactical transport missions, including anti-submarine warfare. However, the program has faced criticism across Europe for maintenance challenges and parts shortages that limited operational readiness. Norway’s withdrawal marked one of the most significant breaks from the multinational project.
