Aviation News – The Netherlands has formally handed over 18 F-16 fighter jets to Romania in a move strengthening NATO’s regional air defense and pilot training capabilities.

The official transfer took place November 3, in Bucharest, where Romanian Brigadier General Ion Cornel Pleșa, Chief of the General Directorate for Armaments, and Linda Ruseler, Director of Movable Property at the Dutch Ministry of Finance, signed the transfer documents. The aircraft will serve in Romania’s newly established F-16 training center, which will train both Romanian and Ukrainian pilots, marking a significant step in European defense cooperation.

The F-16s, previously operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, will now play a key role in enhancing NATO’s eastern flank and supporting Ukraine’s air capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions. The training program aims to accelerate the readiness of Ukrainian pilots transitioning to Western aircraft standards.

“This transfer underscores the Netherlands’ continued commitment to European security and solidarity with our allies,” said a spokesperson from the Dutch Ministry of Defence. “By supporting the training of Romanian and Ukrainian pilots, we contribute to regional stability and operational readiness.”

Looking ahead, the Bucharest F-16 Training Center is expected to become a permanent hub for advanced pilot instruction within NATO. It represents a model for future multinational cooperation, bridging technology, training, and defense strategy across allied nations.

The handover marks a new chapter in European air defense collaboration, reinforcing both Romania’s air force modernization and Ukraine’s capability development. The initiative highlights the Netherlands’ proactive defense diplomacy and the alliance’s unity in ensuring security in the region.
