Aviation News – Ukraine and Sweden Seal Historic Fighter Jet Agreement
Ukraine and Sweden have finalized a major defense cooperation deal paving the way for Kyiv to acquire between 100 and 150 Saab Gripen multirole fighter aircraft. The agreement marks a historic step in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and represents Sweden’s largest-ever export order in the defense sector.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference held at Saab’s facility in Linköping, attended by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The deal underscores Sweden’s growing role in supporting Ukraine’s defense modernization amid ongoing security challenges. Once completed, Ukraine’s air force will operate a fleet comparable in size to that of Sweden’s own Gripen inventory.
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a modern multirole fighter known for its agility, cost efficiency, and advanced avionics. Designed for rapid deployment and ease of maintenance, the aircraft is capable of performing air defense, reconnaissance, and ground-attack missions. Integrating the Gripen will significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its airspace and coordinate with NATO-standard systems.
