Ethiopian Airlines Cements African Leadership with Order for 11 Boeing 737 MAX Jets

AviationNews – Ethiopian Airlines has solidified its dominance in the African aviation market by committing to the purchase of 11 additional Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

Announced today at the Dubai Airshow 2025, this latest agreement expands the carrier’s order book and reinforces its aggressive growth strategy. The deal underscores the airline’s confidence in the single-aisle platform to serve its rapidly densifying regional and medium-haul network connecting Addis Ababa to the world.

The agreement was finalized during a high-profile signing ceremony featuring Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, and Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing. This order builds upon a previous significant commitment made in 2023, further extending Ethiopian’s status as the operator with the largest Boeing backlog on the African continent. Unlike replacement-driven orders common in mature markets, management confirmed that these specific airframes are intended purely for fleet expansion, aligning with the carrier’s roadmap to increase connectivity across Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Europe.

From an operational standpoint, the Boeing 737-8 (MAX 8) offers the airline critical efficiency gains essential for its “Vision 2035” strategy. Powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines and featuring advanced aerodynamics, the jet delivers a 20% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to the aircraft it augments. This performance is vital for Ethiopian’s high-altitude hub operations in Addis Ababa, allowing the carrier to deploy capacity flexibly on routes where demand requires high frequency but may not yet justify widebody tonnage.

Commenting on the strategic importance of the acquisition, CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the forward-looking nature of the deal. “We are thrilled to be announcing our agreement with Boeing for an additional 11 737-8 airplanes,” Tasew stated. “The order will support our growth plans that we have set as part of our vision and strategy. We look forward to flying Boeing airplanes for years to come and continuing to serve our customers by bringing them high-performance airplanes with passenger comfort.”

Looking ahead, this order is a key building block in Ethiopian Airlines’ ambitious Vision 2035 plan, which targets a fleet size of over 270 aircraft and a network covering more than 200 destinations. The carrier also hinted at further widebody activity, suggesting that options for Boeing 787 Dreamliners could be exercised in the near future to support long-haul expansion. As the airline integrates these new narrowbodies, it is poised to capture a growing share of the burgeoning intra-African travel market.

By locking in delivery slots for these 11 737 MAX jets, Ethiopian Airlines is ensuring it has the requisite hardware to maintain its trajectory as Africa’s premier aviation group. The move not only deepens an 80-year partnership with the U.S. manufacturer but also signals to regional competitors that Ethiopian intends to maintain its formidable pace of growth.
