Embraer A-29 Super Tucano Gains New Capability to Counter Unmanned Aerial

Aviation News – The A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft has expanded its mission profile to include counter-unmanned aerial system (UAS) operations, a move expected to enhance its versatility for current and future operators.

The enhancement integrates primarily existing onboard sensors and systems, enabling the aircraft to detect, track, and counter hostile drones. This upgrade aligns with increasing global defense priorities, as militaries seek cost-effective solutions for emerging aerial threats. The A-29, widely used for reconnaissance, training, and light strike missions, now adds drone defense to its proven portfolio.

The counter-UAS capability leverages the aircraft’s sensor suite, data processing systems, and targeting equipment to identify and neutralize low-altitude unmanned aircraft. This allows operators to employ the Super Tucano in roles traditionally requiring more specialized platforms, broadening its operational relevance in both low-intensity conflicts and border surveillance environments.
