Aviation News – Polish Fighters Scramble to Intercept Russian Aircraft Over Baltic Sea
Poland’s air force intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Thursday, marking the second such incident in as many days, according to Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The repeated encounters highlight rising tensions in NATO’s northeastern airspace amid ongoing regional security concerns.
Poland’s army confirmed that on Wednesday, Polish MiG-29 fighter jets were dispatched to intercept a Russian aircraft conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace. The Russian plane reportedly had no filed flight plan and was flying with its transponder switched off—a violation of standard international aviation safety procedures. The latest interception on Thursday underscores NATO’s continuous air policing operations in the Baltic region to monitor and secure allied airspace.
“Our pilots once again demonstrated professionalism and readiness in safeguarding NATO’s eastern flank,” Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz stated. “Poland will continue to uphold its responsibilities in ensuring the security of allied airspace over the Baltic region.”
