Aviation News Summer Special – When it comes to flying aircraft at the very edge of performance and safety, test pilots stand apart. They are the ones trusted to evaluate prototypes, explore unknown flight conditions, and ensure that every aircraft meets the strictest standards. But becoming a test pilot isn’t just about skill in the cockpit — it requires specialized training at one of a handful of elite institutions around the world.

The Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) officially recognizes only eight test pilot schools globally. Each follows rigorous training standards that combine academic theory, simulator work, and hands-on flight testing in a wide range of aircraft. Here’s a closer look at these top schools.

Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) – United Kingdom

Founded in 1943, ETPS is the world’s oldest test pilot school. Now operated by QinetiQ in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence, ETPS trains both military and civilian pilots and engineers. Its students gain experience across fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms, with a strong focus on international cooperation.

U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (USAF TPS) – Edwards AFB, California

Located in the Mojave Desert, this is the U.S. Air Force’s premier institution for test pilot training. The program lasts approximately one year and includes instruction in performance testing, systems evaluation, and flight sciences. Graduates often go on to lead key aerospace development programs for the Air Force and NASA.

U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) – Patuxent River, Maryland

The only U.S. school that trains both rotary-wing and fixed-wing test pilots, USNTPS is known for its intensive 11-month curriculum. The school serves Navy, Marine Corps, and allied military aviators, as well as select civilian engineers.

École du Personnel Navigant d’Essais et de Réception (EPNER) – France

Established in 1946, EPNER trains test pilots and flight test engineers for both military and civil programs. Located at Istres Air Base, the school offers a unique European perspective with a diverse fleet, from fighter jets to helicopters.

International Test Pilots School (ITPS) – Canada

Based in London, Ontario, ITPS is one of the few civilian institutions recognized by SETP. It offers EASA-approved courses and advanced master’s programs in Flight Test and Evaluation. Students come from both military forces and the civil sector worldwide.

National Test Pilot School (NTPS) – Mojave, California, USA

NTPS is the only civilian test pilot school in the United States. With a reputation for high academic standards and access to a wide variety of aircraft, NTPS serves both government and commercial clients globally. Its graduates are found in aerospace companies and military programs alike.

Indian Air Force Test Pilot School – India

Located at the Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment in Bangalore, this school trains Indian military pilots in the demanding art of flight testing. The program has also hosted students from friendly nations in Asia and Africa.

Brazilian Test Pilot School (EFEV) – Brazil

Established in the early 2000s, EFEV supports the Brazilian Air Force’s flight test needs and offers training to other South American air arms. It has played a role in evaluating Embraer’s aircraft programs.

Choosing the Right School

The “best” test pilot school depends on your background and career path.

  • Military career track? Schools like USAF TPS, USNTPS, ETPS, and EPNER provide direct links to defense programs.
  • Civilian or mixed career path? NTPS and ITPS offer international access and flexibility, along with strong industry connections.
  • Regional specialization? IAF TPS and EFEV focus on domestic aerospace programs but maintain some international exchange.

Regardless of which you choose, expect a demanding mix of academic study, simulator training, and high-risk flight testing. Graduates join an elite community responsible for shaping the future of aviation safety and performance.
