Aviation News – July 2, 2025 – On June 30, 2025, Japan Airlines flight JL8696 (operated by its Spring Japan subsidiary) experienced a frightening in-flight emergency. Departing from Shanghai Pudong Airport and bound for Tokyo Narita, the Boeing 737 suddenly dropped from 36,000 feet to approximately 10,500 feet in just 10 minutes after a cabin pressurization failure triggered an emergency alert.
Oxygen masks deployed automatically, and with 191 passengers and crew aboard, panic ensued. Video footage shows travelers donning masks and gripping armrests while a flight attendant reassured them. Some passengers, fearing the worst, rushed to write farewell messages and share personal information like insurance and banking details .
Pilots declared an emergency, diverted to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, and landed safely at around 8:50 p.m. local time. Remarkably, no injuries were reported. Passengers received ¥15,000 (approx. US $93–$104) in compensation and overnight lodging.
Authorities confirmed the incident stemmed from a pressurization system malfunction, triggering a rapid descent and oxygen mask deployment. An official investigation has been launched.
