Aviation News – Shield AI has unveiled the full-scale prototype of the X-BAT, billed as the world’s first autonomous vertical takeoff and landing strike fighter designed to meet future collaborative combat aircraft requirements.

The prototype was revealed at Shield AI’s facility in Frisco, Texas, and is scheduled for transport by road to the company’s flight testing base in Newton, Kansas. Developed to address evolving defense demands worldwide, the aircraft is engineered to align with upcoming collaborative combat aircraft initiatives by global armed forces. Compared to initial U.S. Air Force collaborative combat aircraft options such as the FQ-42 and FQ-44, the X-BAT boasts a larger physical footprint, increased payload capacity, and flight performance characteristics closely mirroring crewed fighter jets.

The X-BAT measures approximately half the size of an F-35 fighter jet and incorporates an afterburning GE F110 engine equipped with advanced thrust vectoring capabilities. This propulsion system allows the drone to combine high-speed flight performance with vertical takeoff and landing flexibility, eliminating reliance on traditional runways. Its autonomous architecture relies on cutting-edge software to execute complex strike missions independently in contested airspace environments.

“The X-BAT represents a massive leap forward in combining fighter-class performance with vertical takeoff capabilities to meet critical collaborative combat aircraft needs,” stated defense industry representatives regarding the strategic importance of this autonomous platform.

Looking ahead, flight testing in Kansas will validate the aircraft’s handling qualities and propulsion integration, paving the way for operational trials with military partners. As defense agencies pivot toward uncrewed force multipliers, this platform could redefine tactical air combat capabilities across multiple branches of service.

The public debut of the X-BAT marks a pivotal milestone in military aviation technology. By merging high-performance strike capabilities with vertical flight flexibility, Shield AI establishes a new benchmark for uncrewed combat aerial systems.
