Aviation News – Defence technology leader L3Harris Technologies has completed production of the first 35 Viper Shield electronic warfare systems, providing advanced digital protection for the global F-16 fleet.
The completion of these initial units marks a major operational milestone as the company scales manufacturing toward full-rate production. Currently, L3Harris holds orders for 233 Viper Shield systems from eight partner nations committed to enhancing their airborne defense capabilities. The milestone underscores growing international reliance on sophisticated electronic countermeasure systems to protect fighter aircraft in increasingly complex combat airspaces.
Formally designated for the advanced Block 70/72 aircraft, Viper Shield functions by creating an active digital armor around the fighter jet. The system detects, identifies, and actively counters complex radio frequency threats in real time to disrupt adversary targeting systems. To ensure manufacturing flexibility, L3Harris has engineered the capability to operate either as an integrated internal system or as an external podized countermeasure, recently building its first pod leveraging production-standard components.
The Viper Shield system features an all-digital, software-defined architecture built on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology. This design delivers a compact form factor with reduced total weight, allowing easy field integration while simplifying future software upgrades to counter emerging threats. Additionally, the electronic warfare suite offers full interoperability with the advanced APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar while remaining backward-compatible across all legacy F-16 blocks.
“The $1 billion shared investment by countries operating F-16s means the U.S. Air Force and National Guard could benefit from joining the program,” said Chris Aebli, President of Communications & Spectrum Dominance at L3Harris. “The foreign investment is funding development, lab testing, flight testing and current production of Viper Shield systems, which presents the United States with a savings opportunity to avoid upfront costs.”
As L3Harris ramps up manufacturing to fulfill the remaining 198 units on order, the active production line offers a low-risk, cost-effective solution for additional global operators. Future adoption by additional partner air forces will further expand the platform’s industrial footprint and secure long-term supply chain maturity.
