Aviation News – L3Harris has introduced a podded version of its Viper Shield electronic warfare system, giving nations operating F-16 fighter jets a new option to upgrade survivability. The external pod offers the same advanced protection as the internally integrated system while adding flexibility for legacy fleets.

Seven U.S. partner nations have already selected Viper Shield, with Poland the most recent to join the program. The system is designed to support operators of both new and older F-16s, including Block 50 and earlier models. By offering both podded and internal options, L3Harris aims to increase accessibility and reduce costs for partner air forces worldwide.

The podded Viper Shield provides advanced digital self-protection against modern threats. Its modular design allows operators to quickly move systems between aircraft, reducing the number of units required across a fleet. With rapid fielding supported by an open-architecture system, the solution also enables future upgrades such as advanced radar and countermeasure capabilities.

“Seven U.S. partner nations, most recently Poland, have selected Viper Shield for the suite’s advanced EW capabilities and ease of upgrade,” said Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris. “Future customers – especially those who operate the F-16 Block 50 or earlier – may prefer the flexibility of the Viper Shield external Pod to increase aircraft survivability.”

The addition of a podded variant underscores L3Harris’ strategy to extend the operational life of the F-16 while ensuring interoperability among allied air forces. Maintenance efficiencies, reduced downtime, and compatibility across all F-16 blocks make the system an attractive option for future customers.

With global security environments becoming increasingly contested, Viper Shield provides partner nations with a scalable and affordable means to modernize their fleets. By offering both podded and internal variants, L3Harris is positioning the system as a long-term solution for enhancing combat effectiveness and protecting pilots in the modern battlespace.
