AviationNews – Ukraine has successfully conducted field tests of its new Shershen air defense system, a modular multi-caliber platform designed to fire five distinct types of missiles. This domestically developed solution aims to fortify the nation’s skies by providing unprecedented flexibility against intensifying Russian aerial bombardments.
Developed by a company within the National Association of Defense Industries of Ukraine (NAUDI) in collaboration with specialists in radar and guidance systems, the Shershen—meaning “Hornet”—is a response to critical ammunition shortages. The project, highlighted at the World Defense Show 2026, successfully integrated a mix of Soviet-legacy weapons, foreign-made missiles, and emerging Ukrainian designs. Central to its testing was the deployment of R-27 missiles (NATO: AA-10 Alamo), which were originally designed for air-to-air combat but have been ingeniously adapted for ground-based defense.
The technical brilliance of the Shershen lies in its universal launcher architecture, which allows it to operate independently of a specific missile type or radar manufacturer. Utilizing a “multilift” system similar to the Israeli Barak platform, the launcher can be deployed autonomously on the ground, allowing the transport vehicle to relocate and avoid counter-battery fire. This open-architecture control system is reportedly three times cheaper than comparable global solutions, making it a cost-effective way to utilize “orphaned” missile stockpiles that would otherwise remain idle.
“The Shershen system is not just a piece of hardware; it is a strategic shift toward operational independence,” stated Serhii Honcharov, Director of NAUDI. “By enabling a single platform to fire whatever compatible munition is available in the warehouse, we ensure our air defense batteries remain active even when specific supply lines are disrupted.”
Looking ahead, the Shershen is expected to become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s “FrankenSAM” strategy, merging disparate technologies into a cohesive shield. As production scales, the system will likely reduce Kyiv’s reliance on single-source foreign deliveries and provide a versatile model for other nations seeking modular defense solutions.
