Aviation News – Sensor specialist HENSOLDT and Bulgarian UAV manufacturer Dronamics have announced a strategic cooperation to develop a joint unmanned airborne platform designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations. This partnership aims to address critical national security gaps by providing a continuous, long-range aerial solution to detect and target multi-domain threats across Europe.
The collaboration centers on the integration of HENSOLDT’s state-of-the-art mission sensor systems into Dronamics’ flagship Black Swan long-range cargo drone. Announced as Dronamics’ first dedicated defense solution, the project combines established logistics technology with high-end military sensors. This development responds to an increasing demand for European sovereignty in the skies, ensuring that defense capabilities are developed and maintained within the continent.
By merging the Black Swan’s unrivalled endurance and payload capacity with advanced Airborne Early Warning (AEW) technology, the platform becomes Europe’s most versatile Strategic Class III UAS. The technical synergy allows for persistent monitoring over vast distances, significantly enhancing the operational impact of border security and maritime surveillance. The drone’s ability to carry heavy sensor suites over long ranges provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional manned reconnaissance aircraft.
“This fully European Airborne Early Warning system combines the unrivalled endurance, payload and range of Dronamics’ drone technology with HENSOLDT’s state-of-the-art mission sensor systems, making the Black Swan Europe’s most versatile Strategic Class III UAS,” stated the companies during the launch.
The future outlook for this platform involves a rapid deployment across European defense sectors to monitor evolving security threats in real-time. This initiative calls for a shift toward autonomous, high-endurance systems to maintain a constant defensive posture. As the partnership matures, the integrated system is expected to set a new benchmark for European-made defense technology.
This cooperation marks a significant milestone in the evolution of unmanned aerial systems, transitioning from cargo delivery to sophisticated military intelligence. By combining HENSOLDT’s sensor expertise with Dronamics’ proven flight platform, the two companies are providing a robust solution for modern territorial defense.
