AviationNews – Boeing and Air Cambodia have officially announced a landmark agreement at the Singapore Airshow for the purchase of up to 20 737 MAX jets. This historic deal marks the first time a Cambodian carrier will operate Boeing aircraft, signaling a major shift in the region’s competitive aviation landscape.
The agreement, which includes a firm order for 10 737-8 models and options for an additional 10, was originally finalized in December 2025. This purchase represents the largest single-aisle investment in the airline’s history. Previously listed as an unidentified customer on Boeing’s books, Air Cambodia is now stepping into the spotlight to modernize its fleet and replace older, less efficient models as part of a broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity across Southeast Asia.
Technically, the 737-8 provides a significant leap in operational efficiency, boasting a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous generation aircraft. With a range of 3,500 nautical miles, the jet allows the airline to carry up to 178 passengers to high-demand destinations in North Asia and beyond. This increased range and lower operating cost structure enable the carrier to offer more competitive pricing while opening new direct routes that were previously unreachable with their existing fleet of six regional jets.
Dr. David Zhan, CEO of Air Cambodia, highlighted the strategic importance of the move: “The 737-8 gives Air Cambodia the ideal combination of range, capacity and fuel efficiency to support our next phase of growth. This investment will let us launch direct services to important markets across North and Southeast Asia, and offer competitively priced travel for passengers.”
Looking ahead, this acquisition positions Air Cambodia as a central player in a market where Boeing forecasts a demand for nearly 5,000 new airplanes over the next two decades. By integrating these fuel-efficient jets, the airline is not only scaling its network but also contributing to local economic development through job creation and specialized aviation training.
This partnership marks a new era for Cambodian aviation, bringing modern Boeing technology to the Kingdom for the first time. As the airline prepares to take delivery, the focus shifts to how this expanded capacity will reshape tourism and business travel throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
