Aviation News – Pakistan and Bangladesh have opened talks on a potential agreement for the sale of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to Dhaka, a move that could reshape regional air power and expand Islamabad’s defence exports. The discussions, held in Islamabad, underline Pakistan’s ambition to widen its arms supply footprint and strengthen strategic ties with Bangladesh.
The talks were led by the air force chiefs of both countries and confirmed by Pakistan’s military on January 7, following growing interest in the JF-17 after Pakistan’s air force performance in last year’s conflict with India. Islamabad is seeking to capitalise on that combat exposure as it positions the aircraft as a cost-effective option for emerging air forces.
The JF-17 Thunder is a lightweight, multi-role fighter developed jointly by Pakistan and China, designed with a bolt-on upgrade philosophy that allows operators to add new avionics, weapons and sensors over time. For Bangladesh, the aircraft could provide modern air combat capability with manageable operating costs and flexible maintenance requirements.
