Aviation News – Bangladesh Approves Plan for New Multirole Combat Aircraft
Bangladesh’s interim government has given in-principle approval for the purchase of new multirole combat and attack aircraft, signaling a major modernization drive for the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF). Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan confirmed the decision, which also includes plans for new surface-to-air missiles and long-range radar systems.
While the air chief did not specify the model of aircraft, defense analysts and government sources suggest that Bangladesh is likely to select the Chengdu J-10CE fighter, a modern, agile multirole jet known for its advanced radar and weapons capabilities. The possible deal follows discussions between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting in Beijing in March, underscoring the growing defense cooperation between the two nations.
The Chengdu J-10CE, an export variant of China’s advanced fourth-generation fighter, features fly-by-wire controls, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, and compatibility with precision-guided munitions. Its introduction would significantly enhance the BAF’s operational reach, replacing the service’s aging F-7 and MiG-29 fighters, many of which are nearing the end of their service life.
Speaking about the program, Air Chief Marshal Khan said, “This acquisition will mark a new era for the Bangladesh Air Force, enabling it to respond more effectively to modern air defense challenges and regional security demands.”
If finalized, the deal could see up to 20 J-10CE aircraft delivered by 2027, pending approval from an inter-ministerial committee led by Khan and the outcome of negotiations with Chinese officials. The move would position Bangladesh among the growing number of Asian nations opting for advanced Chinese defense platforms.
