Italy has successfully launched the third satellite of the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation constellation, strengthening national Earth observation and defense capabilities. The mission matters as the system supports security, environmental monitoring, and strategic decision-making.

The satellite, owned by the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Ministry of Defense, was built by Thales Alenia Space and launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Operations in orbit are handled by Telespazio, with the satellite’s signal acquired 59 minutes after launch by the Fucino Space Center in Abruzzo, Italy, marking the start of its early mission phase.

COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellites use advanced radar technology to provide high-resolution imagery day and night, in all weather conditions. This capability acts as a bolt in Italy’s space infrastructure, enabling reliable data for civilian protection, environmental monitoring, and defense applications.
