Aviation News – The Royal Australian Air Force has declared final operational capability for a comprehensive upgrade of its entire C-130J Hercules fleet, strengthening Australia’s airlift capability and mission readiness nationwide.
The upgrade covers all 12 C-130J aircraft operated by No. 37 Squadron at RAAF Base Richmond in New South Wales. Delivered under Project AIR 5440, the program has brought the fleet up to the latest Block 8.1 configuration, following a phased modernization effort aimed at extending service life and operational relevance.
The Block 8.1 upgrade includes enhancements to aircraft systems, safety-critical software, and onboard hardware. These improvements increase reliability, improve situational awareness, and support a wider range of missions, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to military logistics, with every system tightened and secured bolt by bolt.
“The declaration of final operational capability confirms the C-130J fleet is fully upgraded and ready to support operations at home and abroad,” a RAAF spokesperson said. “These enhancements ensure our crews can operate safely and effectively in demanding environments while delivering critical outcomes for Australia.”
With the upgrade complete, the RAAF can now fully leverage the Hercules fleet as a core element of its air mobility force, supporting joint operations and regional commitments while maintaining high availability rates.
