Aviation News – South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) officially announced on May 7, 2026, that the KF-21 Boramae has passed its final combat suitability evaluation. This critical milestone marks the completion of the fighter jet’s development phase and authorizes the aircraft for immediate deployment in frontline military operations.

The decision comes after a rigorous three-year testing campaign that followed a provisional assessment granted in May 2023. This homegrown project, representing South Korea’s first attempt at a domestically designed and assembled advanced fighter, has been under intense scrutiny to ensure it meets the specific defense requirements of the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). With this final hurdle cleared, the formal system development is slated to conclude officially in June 2026.

The KF-21 program has been a multi-billion dollar endeavor aimed at replacing the aging fleet of F-4 and F-5 fighters. By achieving “fully combat suitable” status, the aircraft has proven its reliability across various mission profiles, including air-to-air and air-to-ground combat scenarios. The transition from testing to mass production is now in full swing, with the first production models expected to join the ROKAF fleet in the second half of this year.

Technically, the KF-21 Boramae serves as a “4.5-generation” platform, featuring advanced AESA radar and integrated electronic warfare systems. Its design reduces its radar cross-section compared to traditional fighters, providing a significant operational impact by increasing survivability in contested environments. The successful validation of these systems ensures that South Korea can maintain air superiority using its own sovereign technology.

“This milestone confirms that the KF-21 has met all rigorous criteria for modern warfare, marking the successful birth of our first domestic fighter,” stated a high-ranking official from DAPA, emphasizing the pride and strategic autonomy this development brings to the nation.

Looking ahead, the Boramae is expected to become the backbone of South Korea’s aerial defense strategy for decades to come. As the production line ramps up, the global defense market will be watching closely to see if the aircraft becomes a major contender for international export.

The KF-21 Boramae has successfully transitioned from a bold concept to a combat-ready reality. By meeting every performance benchmark, the aircraft secures South Korea’s position among the elite group of nations capable of producing advanced supersonic fighters. The arrival of the first mass-produced units later this year will mark a transformative era for the ROKAF and the regional security landscape.
