Aviation News  – Kingdom of Sweden has officially signed a contract to acquire four C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft from Embraer, marking a major step in enhancing Europe’s tactical airlift capabilities. The deal also includes seven additional purchase options, signaling the potential for expanded cooperation among European allies.

The agreement, announced on October 6, 2025, at Uppsala Air Base, is part of a trilateral partnership between Austria, Sweden, and the Netherlands aimed at joint procurement and interoperability across Europe’s defense landscape. The signing ceremony, hosted by the Swedish Air Force Commander Major General Jonas Wikman, was attended by Defence Minister Pål Jonson and representatives from several C-390 operating nations, including Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

The C-390 Millennium, designed by Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, is a new-generation tactical transport aircraft known for its speed, range, and versatility in cargo and troop missions. The acquisition is expected to modernize Sweden’s airlift operations, improving mission flexibility and strengthening joint operational readiness within NATO and European defense frameworks.

“This acquisition marks a major milestone in the modernization and strengthening of the Swedish Air Force. With the C-390 Millennium, I am convinced we will increase our operational efficiency while enhancing interoperability with our European partners,” said Pål Jonson, Sweden’s Minister for Defence.

Looking ahead, the purchase reinforces Sweden’s role in a growing European defense collaboration centered on the C-390 platform. The aircraft’s inclusion within multiple NATO member fleets is expected to streamline logistics, training, and maintenance efforts across the continent.
