Peru Selects Saab Gripen E Jets, Becomes Third South American Operator After Brazil and Colombia

Aviation News July 11, 2025 – Peru is set to become the third South American nation—after Brazil and Colombia—to operate the Saab JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighter. The Peruvian government has announced its intent to purchase at least 12 Gripen E fighter jets, with an option to acquire up to 24 units in total.

This significant defense acquisition deal is valued at approximately $3.5 billion USD, positioning Saab ahead of rival bids from Lockheed Martin (offering the F-16 Block 70) and Dassault Aviation (proposing the Rafale F4). The Gripen E was ultimately selected for its cost-effectiveness, advanced capabilities, and potential for industrial cooperation.

The decision marks a strategic upgrade for the Peruvian Air Force (FAP), which currently operates a dated and diverse fleet that includes:

  • 11 Mirage 2000P fighters
  • 8 MiG-29s
  • 8 Su-25 ground attack aircraft
  • 20 Cessna A-37 Dragonfly light attack aircraft, many of which have been in service for over 40 years

The introduction of the Gripen E will modernize Peru’s air combat capabilities, enhance interoperability with regional allies, and support future mission readiness across a broad range of operations.
