Aviation News – July 1, 2025 – Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced a landmark agreement to purchase 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 10, marking the airline’s largest direct jet order from a manufacturer since 1996. This major investment aligns with SAS’s strategy to modernize its fleet, enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and improve connectivity across Scandinavia and beyond.
The initial deliveries are set to begin in late 2027, with the rollout continuing over the following four years. The firm order is valued at approximately US$4 billion, excluding purchase rights.
A Strategic Shift for SAS
“This is a defining moment for SAS,” said Anko van der Werff, President & CEO of SAS. “The Embraer E195-E2 offers world-class fuel efficiency, environmental performance, and passenger comfort. It’s key to enabling future growth and strengthening our regional and international networks.”
The E195-E2’s size and range make it ideal for complementing SAS’s existing fleet, optimizing frequency on high-demand routes, and expanding regional and intra-European services. The aircraft’s advanced capabilities also help reduce trip costs while maintaining premium service standards.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core
The E2 family has been successfully tested on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and is on the path to full certification for SAF operation. Currently, blends of up to 50% SAF are already in use, positioning the aircraft as a critical component in SAS’s broader sustainability mission.
Arjan Meijer, CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, commented:
“We are proud to deepen our relationship with SAS through this transformative deal. The E195-E2 is the quietest and most fuel-efficient single-aisle jet available today, offering up to 29% improved fuel efficiency and a 62% lower noise footprint compared to the previous generation.”
Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PW1900G GTF engines, the E195-E2 delivers substantial reductions in fuel burn, emissions, and noise—helping SAS achieve its climate targets and improve its operational performance.
A Future-Ready Fleet
This bold move is a cornerstone in SAS’s transformation toward a more sustainable, modernized fleet. It enables the airline to meet rising passenger expectations while expanding its international footprint and reinforcing its role as a sustainability leader in aviation.
