Aviation News – Israel signs agreement for new attack helicopters

Israel has officially signed an agreement with the United States to acquire 12 Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters for the Israeli Air Force (IAF, Heyl Ha’Avir). The strategic acquisition modernizes the nation’s rotary-wing fleet and reinforces airborne close-support capabilities, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the early 2030s.

The bilateral contract follows a broader Foreign Military Sale (FMS) approval granted by the US in January 2026, which covered up to 30 AH-64E airframes and associated defense equipment valued at approximately USD 3.8 billion. Signed on 14 October 2026, the deal for twelve helicopters marks the initial procurement phase of a potential fleet-wide overhaul. Although a follow-on order for the remaining airframes remains unconfirmed, the framework allows future defense expansions.

The AH-64E Apache Guardian provides modernized digital flight controls, enhanced avionics, and upgraded drive systems. Operating as an advanced battle-management platform, the aircraft integrates manned-unmanned teaming capabilities, allowing crews to control unmanned aerial vehicles directly from the cockpit to extend sensor range and fire-support precision.

“This agreement reflects the enduring strategic partnership between our nations and underscores a shared commitment to maintaining qualitative military advantages in complex defense environments,” noted defense procurement officials during the signing announcement.

The acquisition strengthens regional deterrence and modernizes tactical air power for long-term operational readiness. Defense analysts anticipate the agreement paves the way for further military cooperation and potential follow-on option exercises in coming years.
