EUFOR Chinook Helicopter Crash in Northern Bosnia Leaves Three Dead and Several Injured

Military aviation breaking News

Aviation News – An Italian Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter operated by the European Union Force crashed in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday afternoon, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. The tragic incident occurred in the village of Gorice, near Brcko, during a routine mission under Operation Althea.

The crashed aircraft belonged to the Italian Army contingent participating in Operation Althea, the European Union’s military deployment overseeing the implementation of the 1995 Dayton Agreement. This landmark peace accord successfully ended the three-and-a-half-year Bosnian War. EUFOR confirmed that the accident took place on Thursday afternoon, while reassuring the public that no civilian infrastructure, property, or vehicles sustained damage, and no civilians were injured on the ground.

EUFOR maintains a 1,200-soldier mission that took over peacekeeping responsibilities from NATO in 2004, operating directly under a UN Security Council mandate. The mission focuses on maintaining a safe and secure environment while overseeing the military provisions established by the Dayton peace framework. Emergency response teams and military investigators quickly secured the crash site in Gorice to determine the precise technical or environmental factors contributing to the accident.
