Aviation News – The Italian Air Force has ordered two new MQ-9A Block 5 Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. to expand its operational aerial surveillance capabilities. Slated for delivery at the end of 2027, the procurement strengthens Italy’s defense posture across Mediterranean and NATO operational theaters.
The transaction is structured as a Foreign Military Sale managed through the U.S. Air Force, covering the two unmanned aircraft alongside advanced Ground Control Stations. This acquisition builds upon a 20-year defense partnership between Italy and General Atomics, reinforcing a long-standing commitment to modernizing the nation’s remotely piloted fleet. The new additions will integrate directly into the Italian Air Force fleet, providing enhanced continuous aerial oversight.
The procurement comes amid broader efforts to bolster reconnaissance capabilities for joint international and allied security mandates. Italy remains a primary operator of the MQ-9A platform in Europe, using the system extensively for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions. The added capacity ensures uninterrupted maritime and regional domain awareness while maintaining high readiness standards.
The MQ-9A Block 5 Reaper features an operational endurance of up to 26 hours and reaches flight altitudes up to 45,000 feet. Equipped with a payload capacity of 4,600 pounds—including 3,750 pounds of external stores—the aircraft integrates Full-Motion Video, Synthetic Aperture Radar, and automatic takeoff and landing capabilities. Its fault-tolerant flight control system and triple-redundant avionics architecture ensure safety standards that match or exceed traditional manned aircraft.
