On April 5 2024 Italian Air Force has withdrawn the last of its AMX light combat aircraft from use, after 35 years of service with the single-engined type.

The AMX, nicknamed “Ghibli” is a joint venture between Italian and Brazilian manufacturers. The Italian Air Force acquired 110 units in 1989, along with 26 two-seater trainer versions (AMX-T). The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II will replace the AMX within the Aeronautica Militare fleet.

A formal retirement ceremony was staged at the Italian air force’s 51st Wing at Istrana air base.
