Aviation News – Archer Aviation and Korean Air have partnered to adapt Archer’s Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for military applications, anticipating strong interest from South Korea’s defense procurement agency. The collaboration seeks to convert the proven commercial airframe into a versatile platform for defense forces seeking rapid, low-emission tactical mobility.
Under the agreement confirmed in August 2026, Korean Air will oversee local aircraft modifications, military system integration, and flight operations tailored to South Korean defense standards. Archer Aviation will supply technical expertise, engineering support, and assistance throughout the military airworthiness certification process.
The initiative builds on Archer Aviation’s prior flight evaluations with the U.S. Air Force, establishing a solid foundation of military validation for the Midnight platform. By modifying an existing aircraft rather than engineering a new airframe from scratch, both aerospace partners aim to reduce technological risk and significantly accelerate deployment timelines.
Technically, the Midnight eVTOL features a low-noise, zero-operating-emission electric powertrain designed to carry up to four passengers or equivalent cargo across 100-mile operational ranges. Integrating specialized military avionics and mission equipment enables rapid troop deployment, medical evacuation, search-and-rescue tasks, and logistical resupply across mountainous and island terrain.
”Military AAM development represents a blue ocean opportunity to secure leadership in future core aviation power and industry dominance,” stated a Korean Air representative regarding the strategic initiative. “Building on our cooperation with Archer Aviation, we aim to seize this critical window for AAM development and build a new model for defense exports.”
