AviationNews – Airbus Helicopters has commenced operational maritime surveillance missions using its U030 Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system on behalf of the European Maritime Safety Agency. The long-endurance vertical takeoff and landing platform delivers real-time intelligence to national coast guards and border authorities directly from naval patrol vessels.
The European deployment follows a 30 million euro multi-year framework agreement awarded to Airbus Helicopters to provide remotely piloted aircraft services across European Union waters. Operating with sub-contractor Extensee, the mission initially focuses on the Baltic Sea region—supporting maritime agencies in Finland, Estonia, and Latvia—with scope to expand to broader EU coastal corridors. The platform, originally developed by Aerovel and acquired by Airbus, strengthens joint coast guard functions, including border monitoring, anti-smuggling enforcement, fisheries control, and environmental protection.
Classified as a lightweight Group 2 tactical drone with a 25-kilogram maximum launch weight, the U030 Flexrotor operates as a tail-sitting vertical takeoff and landing craft capable of transitioning into efficient wing-borne forward flight. The uncrewed aircraft requires an expeditionary launch and recovery footprint of only 3.7 by 3.7 meters, allowing small patrol boats and vessels lacking dedicated helicopter decks to deploy long-range aerial assets. With an endurance exceeding 12 hours, the aircraft carries high-definition electro-optical, infrared, and maritime radar sensor suites that stream actionable telemetry directly to national operations centers.
