Aviation News – Yakovlev and the United Aircraft Corporation have completed the successful maiden flight of Russia’s first serial-production MC-21-310 airliner from the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. The 83-minute flight marks a decisive step in replacing Western-built commercial aircraft with fully domestic passenger jets.
The MC-21-310 project, developed under state defense conglomerate Rostec, serves as the centerpiece of Russia’s push for total aviation sovereignty. Originally envisioned with foreign components, international trade sanctions prompted a comprehensive program redesign. Engine designers, structural engineers, and systems suppliers worked to substitute imported parts with locally manufactured alternatives across every major system.
The newly flown aircraft, designated serial number MS.0014, reached an altitude of 6,000 meters and an indicated airspeed of 600 kilometers per hour during its inaugural flight profile. Unlike earlier test prototypes, this airframe represents the final manufacturing standard from the factory line. The flight verified that the standardized assembly process at Irkutsk meets operational standards while testing flight control stability in multiple configurations.
Powering the twinjet are Russian-made Aviadvigatel PD-14 turbofans, replacing earlier Pratt & Whitney powerplants. The aircraft incorporates domestic carbon-fiber composite wings, advanced flight control avionics, and redesigned hydraulic and landing gear systems. These technical developments maintain low aerodynamic drag and efficient fuel consumption while standardizing maintenance procedures for domestic airline operators.
Highlighting the operational performance, UAC test pilot Roman Taskaev confirmed the success of the maiden sortie following touchdown. “The first production aircraft performed well, and the flight assignment was completed in full,” Taskaev stated, verifying the baseline stability of the production-standard model.
With flight testing continuing toward type certification, manufacturers are preparing an initial batch of 18 MC-21-310 airliners for production. Flagship carrier Aeroflot will act as the launch operator, incorporating the aircraft into its high-density domestic routes. Commercial airlines and maintenance providers must now accelerate fleet transition plans and staff training to support upcoming deliveries.
The debut of the serial-production MC-21-310 signals a structural shift in domestic commercial transport. By completing its maiden flight with 100% domestic components, the airliner moves from prototype status into active factory manufacturing. This achievement builds a firm groundwork for modernizing passenger fleets and maintaining reliable long-term air connectivity.
