Aviation News – Russia has successfully conducted the maiden flight of the second MC-21 airliner fully equipped with domestically produced components, marking a major step toward reducing dependence on foreign suppliers amid ongoing sanctions.
The flight, announced by the state-owned United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), took place in late October at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant in Siberia. The MC-21 program, developed by Irkut under the UAC umbrella, aims to become Russia’s flagship medium-haul passenger jet, competing with models such as the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX. The second prototype’s flight confirms the steady progress of the country’s aircraft import-substitution strategy initiated in response to Western trade restrictions.
The new version of the MC-21 features Russian-made PD-14 engines, avionics, and composite wings produced with domestically developed materials. Engineers highlight that the aircraft’s aerodynamic efficiency and range remain comparable to its earlier versions that used imported components, ensuring performance standards are maintained despite the supply chain overhaul.
“The successful test flight of the fully localized MC-21 is a testament to the resilience and capability of Russia’s aviation industry,” said Yury Slyusar, President of the United Aircraft Corporation. “This achievement demonstrates that we can independently produce competitive aircraft that meet modern global standards.”
With flight testing now expanding, UAC plans to accelerate certification efforts and begin serial production for Russian airlines within the next few years. The development signals a broader push for technological self-sufficiency across Russia’s aerospace sector and a renewed effort to strengthen its civil aviation market presence.
As the MC-21 moves closer to commercial service, industry observers see it as a pivotal test of Russia’s ability to sustain high-tech manufacturing under sanctions. The project’s progress could shape the country’s aviation future and redefine its role in the global aircraft market.
