Aviation News – The Latvian Air Force is evaluating the acquisition of light combat aircraft to intercept incoming unmanned aerial vehicles, identifying Embraer’s A-29 Super Tucano as a leading candidate. The initiative took shape in mid-July 2026, when outgoing Air Force Commander Colonel Viesturs Masulis attended the Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference in London. During the defense summit, Colonel Masulis held targeted discussions with defense industry leaders, including representatives from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer, to review options for multi-role light attack and advanced training aircraft.
The discussions follow a broader military restructuring as Latvia commits more than one billion euros toward comprehensive air defense modernization. By incorporating fixed-wing turboprop combat platforms, the Baltic nation seeks a flexible solution positioned between ground-based missile systems and traditional fighter jets to secure its sovereign borders.
Operating as an agile interceptor platform, the A-29 Super Tucano provides distinct functional advantages for short-range air space patrol and low-speed engagement. The aircraft features low operational costs, built-in armament, and advanced electro-optical sensors, allowing pilots to detect, track, and destroy slow-flying unmanned targets far more cost-effectively than supersonic interceptor aircraft.

As defence authorities wait for formal cost and delivery proposals from manufacturers, military planners will conduct a thorough feasibility study to define long-term fleet requirements.
