Aviation News – Legal Challenge Dismissed for Gatwick Airport Expansion
London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) will press ahead with plans for its £2.2 billion Northern Runway Project after British judges comprehensively rejected an appeal challenging the expansion. The landmark ruling removes the final legal barrier, allowing Britain’s second busiest airport to routinely operate a second runway.
On August 4, 2026, senior judges at the Court of Appeal dismissed legal challenges brought by local campaign groups, including Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE). The dispute originated when the UK Government granted official planning permission for the dual-runway development in September 2025. Opponents subsequently filed judicial review claims, contending that ministers failed to adequately account for climate impact targets and aircraft noise concerns.
However, the High Court upheld the government’s approval decision on June 23, 2026, finding the Secretary of State’s assessment to be lawful and grounded in national aviation policy. Campaigners launched a subsequent appeal, but the Court of Appeal ruled that each ground raised was entirely unarguable. The decision brings an end to an eight-year planning and legal process, providing regulatory certainty for the airport’s expansion strategy.
Operationally, the project will reposition Gatwick’s existing emergency runway 12 meters north so it can function routinely alongside the primary runway. This modification will accommodate departing narrow-bodied passenger aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, while leaving the main runway for arrivals and long-haul flights. The operational shift will significantly boost air traffic capacity, reduce tarmac congestion, and improve departure punctuality across the network.

This final ruling means that we can now press on with the important job of bringing this exciting project to life and move forward into the design and delivery phase.”
