Emirates and South African Airways Upgrade Strategic Alliance with Expanded Reciprocal Codeshare Deal

AviationNewsEmirates and South African Airways have expanded their long-standing alliance into a fully reciprocal codeshare agreement. The major deal unlocks nine strategic destinations across central and southern Africa, significantly bolstering connectivity between global markets and the African continent.

Securing key regulatory approvals marks a transformative shift in a partnership that spans nearly three decades. Previously operating under a unilateral structure where South African Airways (SAA) placed its designator code on Emirates flights, the new arrangement allows the Dubai-based carrier to place its code directly on SAA‘s domestic and regional routes. The extended network incorporates three key South African domestic routes—linking Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, and Port Elizabeth—alongside six vital international routes connecting Johannesburg with Kinshasa, Gaborone, Windhoek, Lusaka, Harare, and Victoria Falls.

Operationally, the enhanced agreement delivers a streamlined travel experience for passengers traveling across combined flight schedules. Travelers can now book single-ticket itineraries, benefit from aligned flight connections, and receive through-checked baggage handling straight to their final destinations. The operational integration reinforces Johannesburg’s position as a premier aviation crossroads, connecting Emirates‘ international widebody fleet—comprising Boeing 777s, Airbus A380s, and newly added A350s—directly to regional African air routes.

“The expansion of our partnership with Emirates marks an important milestone in SAA’s strategy to strengthen connectivity across Africa while enhancing access to global markets,” said Matshela Seshibe, Acting Group CEO of South African Airways. “Through this reciprocal codeshare agreement, customers will benefit from a more seamless travel experience and greater choice across our combined networks.”

By deepening flight integration, both carriers aim to capture surging international travel demand into Africa while stimulating business, trade, and regional tourism. The expanded partnership opens smoother commercial channels between Europe, the Middle East, and growing African economic hubs.

The bilateral expansion positions both Emirates and South African Airways to capture vital market share along high-density African trade corridors. By unifying their route networks, both airlines build a resilient foundation for long-term passenger growth. Moving forward, the partnership sets a new benchmark for cross-continental airline cooperation in southern Africa.
