AviationNews – The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has escalated operational intensity during Exercise Pitch Black 2026, bringing together 21 participating nations over northern Australia. Operating primarily from RAAF Base Darwin, the biennial exercise serves as the premier interoperability test for air combat capabilities across the strategic Indo-Pacific region.
Running from July 20 to August 7, 2026, Exercise Pitch Black 2026 involves over 100 advanced aircraft and more than 2,500 military personnel. The event features a diverse array of international platforms, including the F-35A Lightning II, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and EA-18G Growler. Notable milestones for the 2026 iteration include the historical first deployment of Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-35A fighters to the exercise, alongside participating contingents from India, Germany, Indonesia, South Korea, France, Spain, and the United States.
The exercise focuses on Large Force Employment (LFE) missions within one of the world’s largest designated military airspace training areas over the Northern Territory. Participating squadrons conduct complex simulated air battles involving offensive counter-air operations, air-to-air refueling, and tactical airborne early warning coordination. Integrating fifth-generation stealth fighters such as the F-35A with legacy platforms allows multinational forces to synchronize data links, refine tactics, and test joint communications in high-threat electronic environments.
