AviationNews – Vietnamese carrier Bamboo Airways has officially halted all regular commercial scheduled flights as of August 1, 2026, as part of a sweeping corporate overhaul. The drastic operational suspension follows years of compounding financial losses, severe liquidity constraints, and a critical reduction in the company’s active aircraft fleet.
Founded in 2017, Bamboo Airways once represented a fast-growing hybrid airline operating a fleet of up to 44 aircraft across 20 domestic destinations and 18 international routes. However, ongoing negotiations with aircraft lessors over delayed payments and mounting debt forced the carrier to drastically trim its fleet. By late July 2026, the airline’s inventory had shrunk to just three aircraft on paper, with only a single airframe actively flying regular rotations.
From an operational standpoint, the carrier has removed individual passenger ticket sales from its online booking engine for core domestic routes, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. To maintain minimal operations, the airline has shifted its focus to ad-hoc contract charter flights, such as group tour routes linking Da Nang with Macau. Operating a high-frequency multi-leg schedule with a single 192-seat Airbus A321-200 (registration VN-A227) previously triggered cascading schedule delays and widespread flight cancellations across its remaining network.
In an official statement addressing the operational disruptions, the airline acknowledged the mounting difficulties facing travelers: “Bamboo Airways takes responsibility for the inconveniences that have arisen and is currently mobilizing resources to ensure the rights and interests of passengers,” the carrier stated, while CEO Truong Phuong Thanh noted in partner communications that management had “no other choice” but to suspend unsustainable routes during this transition.
Looking ahead, the airline is concentrating on processing passenger refund requests and negotiating debt relief with key financial stakeholders. Industry analysts emphasize that the long-term survival of Bamboo Airways hinges on its capacity to secure vital capital injections, restructure lessor obligations, and define a sustainable niche within Southeast Asia’s competitive aviation sector.
The suspension of regular passenger services represents a sobering milestone for an enterprise that once targeted rapid global expansion. While short-term charter contracts offer temporary cash flow, the airline faces a steep climb to rebuild customer confidence and restore a viable network.
