This bilateral initiative reshapes European defense acquisition, enabling Warsaw to expand its initial purchase intent from two strategic aircraft up to a unified order of four units.
The strategic partnership materialized following a series of high-level diplomatic negotiations funded heavily through competitive loan structures. Warsaw originally intended to procure only two specialized military variants utilizing targeted financial instruments from the European Union. However, the signing of a comprehensive bilateral memorandum with Madrid dramatically alters the logistical scope of the defense program, legally obligating both nations to execute the manufacturing procurement under a single, unified acquisition effort.
The agreement officially took shape in late June 2026 during a high-profile diplomatic visit to Madrid by Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and National Defence Minister. Under the newly ratified text, the Spanish government will immediately share its valuable commercial production positions, allowing the Polish ministry to bypass standard factory delays and secure guaranteed aircraft deliveries by 2030.
The Airbus A330 MRTT operates as a dual-role platform, combining advanced aerial refueling capabilities with high-capacity troop and cargo transport infrastructure. By utilizing an automated boom system or under-wing pods, the aircraft transfers fuel in mid-air to extend the operational range and endurance of front-line fighter jets. “Within two weeks’ time, Poland will arrange with Madrid the details of the contract to buy tanker and transport aircraft,” stated an official spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of National Defence during an update on the acquisition. “Poland will order four A330 MRTT tankers, and we are currently at the final stage of talks regarding industrial return and delivery timelines.”
