Aviation News – The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has finalized a strategic contract with Miami-based aerospace firm Sahar Group to supply and refurbish Sikorsky UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters for the Portuguese Army. This landmark agreement marks the official revival of an organic rotary-wing capability for Portugal, significantly boosting its airborne defense and emergency response infrastructure.
The multi-million dollar agreement falls under the framework of Portugal’s Helicópteros de Apoio, Proteção e Evacuação (HAPE) program. Representatives from both the NSPA and Sahar Group formalized the partnership during an official signing ceremony held at the contractor’s corporate facilities in Miami, Florida. This collaboration leverages international defense channels to fulfill a critical modernization requirement for the European nation.
By utilizing the NSPA’s established procurement framework, Portugal streamlines the acquisition process while ensuring compliance with stringent military standards. The initiative centers on re-establishing a dedicated helicopter squadron based at the Tancos Military Airfield, a location traditionally central to the country’s airborne operations.
Under the technical terms of the program, the UH-60L Black Hawk airframes will be sourced directly from former US Army stocks before undergoing extensive modernization. Sahar Group technicians will refurbish and upgrade the aircraft into a mission-ready configuration tailored to modern multi-role demands. Once delivered, these rugged twin-engine helicopters will execute a wide spectrum of operations, including tactical transport, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), special operations support, and critical wildfire suppression across the region.
