Aviation News – CDB Aviation has completed a sale-and-leaseback transaction for two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners operated by Lufthansa, strengthening the airline’s long-haul fleet while providing additional financial flexibility. The agreement supports Lufthansa’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy with its newest widebody aircraft.
The two Boeing 787-9 aircraft were originally purchased by Lufthansa from Boeing before being acquired by CDB Aviation and leased back to the German carrier. Lufthansa accepted delivery of the aircraft in late 2025 and early 2026, and both are now operating on international long-haul routes. The transaction reflects the continued use of sale-and-leaseback agreements as airlines seek to optimize capital while expanding their fleets.
Both aircraft feature Lufthansa’s new Allegris cabin, offering upgraded Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class products. The airline currently operates 18 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with six additional aircraft still on order. Lufthansa has also confirmed that it plans to place an additional order for 10 more 787-9s, underlining its long-term commitment to the fuel-efficient widebody type.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner combines lower fuel consumption with extended range, making it well suited for intercontinental operations. Together with the Allegris cabin, the aircraft improves passenger comfort while helping Lufthansa reduce operating costs and emissions compared with older-generation long-haul aircraft.
“We are pleased to support Lufthansa with this strategic financing transaction, reinforcing our long-standing relationship while contributing to the airline’s continued fleet modernization efforts,” CDB Aviation said, highlighting the importance of the agreement for both companies.
As demand for long-haul travel continues to recover, Lufthansa is expected to further expand its Dreamliner fleet while replacing older aircraft with more efficient models. The latest lease agreement also demonstrates how aircraft leasing remains an important financing tool for airlines investing in next-generation fleets.
The transaction strengthens the partnership between Lufthansa and CDB Aviation while supporting the airline’s ambitious fleet renewal program. With additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on order and more expected to join the fleet, Lufthansa is positioning itself for future growth in the long-haul market. The continued investment in modern aircraft and upgraded cabins is expected to enhance operational efficiency and the passenger experience for years to come.
