Breakthrough Wisk Aero and NASA Simulation Proves Single Ground Supervisor Can Safely Manage Three Autonomous Aircraft

Aviation News – Autonomous aviation pioneer Wisk Aero, in partnership with NASA, has successfully completed a simulated flight trial proving that a single ground-based operator can manage three pilotless aircraft simultaneously. This landmark test demonstrates how the industry can safely scale uncrewed electric air taxis within existing air traffic control systems without overwhelming operators.

The highly realistic test represents a critical milestone under a five-year Non-Reimbursable Space Act Agreement between the autonomous aviation company and NASA. The simulation connected Wisk’s Autonomy Lab in Mountain View, California, with NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. Utilizing NASA’s Future Flight Central—a specialized facility providing a 360-degree, full-scale airport simulation—the team evaluated aircraft traveling along virtual Instrument Flight Rules routes between Moffett Federal Airfield and San Martin Airport in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Historically, aviation safety has relied on a one-to-one ratio of pilots to aircraft. To achieve commercial viability for Advanced Air Mobility, developers must shift this ratio so that a single remote operator can oversee multiple flights. By testing normal and emergency flight scenarios with actual air traffic controllers using standard procedures, the joint effort successfully validated Wisk’s Multi-Vehicle Supervisor framework.

The system relies on high-level automation, where the aircraft autonomously handles navigation and obstacle avoidance while communicating with air traffic control. The ground-based supervisor monitors the fleet via a Remote Supervision System, stepping in only to approve route changes or manage unforeseen contingencies. During the simulation, researchers carefully measured human cognitive workload and task latency to ensure that managing three aircraft at once remained well within safe operational limits.

The rich data gathered during these exercises will help aviation regulators establish standardized communication protocols and update airspace policies. As autonomous flight technology matures, these findings pave the way for a digitized airspace framework that can handle hundreds of daily urban air taxi flights.

Ultimately, the joint campaign demonstrates that the foundational infrastructure for pilotless air travel is no longer a distant vision. By integrating autonomous flight platforms directly into traditional air traffic control environments, the partners have validated a safe path forward for the industry. The successful simulation brings the global aviation sector one step closer to making everyday, on-demand aerial transit a reality.
