Aviation News – Anduril Industries Unveils Thunder Autonomous Attack Rotorcraft to Boost Crewed Helicopter Firepower and Survivability

Anduril Industries has unveiled Thunder, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to serve as an uncrewed loyal wingman for current and next-generation crewed attack aircraft. Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the platform is purpose-built to multiply combat power, deliver heavy standoff firepower, and protect human pilots in high-threat, drone-saturated battlefields.

The defense technology firm formally introduced Thunder following a joint development effort with electric air taxi developer Archer Aviation. Unveiled in July 2026, the dual-use tiltrotor architecture leverages commercial propulsion advances to lower manufacturing costs while addressing the growing lethal risks posed to conventional military helicopters by cheap loitering munitions, air defenses, and ubiquitous persistent surveillance.

Current land warfare conditions have increasingly placed traditional attack helicopters like the AH-64 Apache at extreme risk within the near-surface domain. By pairing multiple Thunder aircraft with a single crewed platform, commanders can project force deeper into contested airspace without placing aircrews in direct harm’s way.

The Thunder rotorcraft utilizes a series hybrid-electric powertrain and Optimum-Speed Tiltrotors to deliver long-range, high-speed flight combined with vertical takeoff and landing flexibility. Built on open architecture and powered by Anduril’s Lattice for Mission Autonomy software, the platform manages complex formation maneuvers automatically and features modular payload bays capable of carrying up to 10 air-to-ground missiles, 16 launched effects, or 76 rockets alongside counter-drone effectors.

As defense forces seek cost-effective mass and team-based autonomous aviation capabilities, Thunder establishes a new operational blueprint for future air assault and attack missions. With surrogate flight testing already underway and a formal first flight targeted for 2027, the system promises to reshape how military commanders execute contested maneuver warfare.

The launch of Thunder marks a significant advancement in autonomous rotary-wing military aviation. By integrating high-capacity weapon payloads and flight-proven mission software into a runway-independent tiltrotor frame, Anduril offers military operators scalable, attritable mass. This capability ensures crewed assets retain decisive battlefield dominance while minimizing human exposure to modern air defense threats.
