Aviation News – Aviation innovators Skyryse and Robinson Helicopter Company announced a new strategic alliance to develop a highly capable, autonomous unmanned aircraft system (UAS) tailored specifically for global military applications. Announced on June 24, 2026, the joint initiative will transform the popular turbine-powered Robinson R66 platform into a fully automated vehicle.

The technology integration will pair Robinson’s extensive manufacturing infrastructure with Skyryse’s proprietary SkyOS flight automation software. Both companies operate headquarters in Southern California, facilitating a rapid engineering pipeline. The development marks a major shift for the helicopter platform, utilizing its commercial success to serve immediate international national security demands.

The partnership focuses on capitalizing on an established aircraft platform rather than designing a costly experimental airframe from scratch. By targeting the competitive defense sector, the project positions a historically civilian rotorcraft as a strong candidate for government procurement programs. The agreement was finalized following a sharp rise in military interest regarding rapidly scalable, cost-effective autonomous platforms.

Integrating the software transforms the aircraft into a Group 4 unmanned system capable of executing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) profiles. Beyond basic scouting, the system equips the uncrewed helicopter to seamlessly handle manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) operations and orchestrate complex air-launched effects (ALE) in high-threat environments.
