Announced in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, on June 11, 2026, this landmark initial purchase establishes the launch customer for the upgraded aircraft series just days after its high-profile public debut.
The agreement marks a crucial financial and operational milestone for the resurrected aircraft line, which is based on the legacy Dornier 228-200 platform originally produced in Germany between 1981 and 1998. General Atomics decided to resume modernized production of the airframe following a successful demonstrator maiden flight on May 2, 2026, and its official public unveiling on June 8. For security and operational safety in remote regions, the purchasing NGO requested to shield its identity while confirming a delivery date scheduled for early 2027.
The modernized twin-turboprop integrates crucial performance enhancements, replacing the original four-blade design with advanced five-blade propellers that reduce fuel burn, lower operating costs, and decrease the overall noise footprint. Built with short take-off and landing (STOL) capability, the aircraft functions from unpaved, austere runways, making it a critical asset for isolated regions that lack major airport infrastructure. In its specialized cargo configuration, operators can remove passenger seats to accommodate over 2,200 kilograms of bulky payload, enabling a rapid transition between disaster relief transport, medical evacuations, and search and rescue missions.

Moving forward, General Atomics expects to target expanded contracts across civil, governmental, and defense sectors worldwide.
The introduction of the high-capacity airframe will dramatically improve emergency reaction times for critical international operations. By maintaining a highly robust supply chain and incorporating integrated glass cockpits alongside upgraded avionics, the manufacturer establishes a sustainable long-term framework for remote logistics. Delivery of this customized, mission-ready unit in 2027 will officially transition the development program into active deployment.
