Aviation News – Airbus is reconsidering the timing of a launch for a larger version of its A220 passenger jet after receiving a muted response from major aircraft leasing companies and facing internal discussions over the aircraft’s range and performance. The uncertainty means an announcement at this summer’s Farnborough Airshow is now considered unlikely, according to industry sources.
Airbus had raised expectations earlier this year that it could unveil an expanded A220 variant as early as the Farnborough Airshow in late July. However, six industry sources said the European manufacturer has become more cautious as it evaluates market demand and technical requirements. Leasing companies, which play a significant role in aircraft purchasing decisions, have reportedly shown limited enthusiasm for the proposed aircraft, prompting Airbus to reassess its plans.
The proposed larger A220 would offer airlines additional seating capacity while retaining the efficiency advantages that have made the aircraft family popular on short- and medium-haul routes. Airbus is also weighing questions surrounding operational range, performance capabilities, and how the aircraft would fit within its existing product portfolio. These factors are considered critical in determining whether the project can achieve long-term commercial success.
